The Momella Route is a popular trail for climbing Mount Meru, the second-highest peak in Tanzania after Kilimanjaro. Here's a itinerary for the Momella Route on Mount Meru:


Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania

  • Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport

  • Transfer to hotel in Arusha

  • Attend a pre-climb briefing with your trekking company

  • Final gear check and preparation


Day 2: Arusha to Momella Gate, then trek to Miriakamba Hut

  • Drive from Arusha to Momella Gate (1-2 hours)

  • Complete park formalities at the gate

  • Begin trekking through montane forest and open grassland

  • Ascend steadily to Miriakamba Hut at around 2,514 meters

  • Enjoy dinner and rest at the hut

  • Trekking time: 4-6 hours


Day 3: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

  • Continue trekking through montane forest and heathland

  • Pass the Maio Falls and enjoy scenic views of the Meru Crater

  • Ascend to Saddle Hut at around 3,570 meters

  • Rest and acclimatize at the hut

  • Trekking time: 3-5 hours


Day 4: Saddle Hut to Summit (Socialist Peak) and descent to Miriakamba Hut

  • Begin summit attempt around midnight

  • Trek through rocky and steep terrain

  • Reach Socialist Peak (4,566 meters) for sunrise and panoramic views

  • Descend back to Saddle Hut for breakfast

  • Continue descent to Miriakamba Hut

  • Trekking time: 10-12 hours


Day 5: Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate

  • Descend through montane forest and open grassland

  • Reach Momella Gate, where you'll complete park formalities and receive your summit certificates

  • Transfer back to Arusha

  • Celebrate your achievement with a well-deserved meal and rest

  • Trekking time: 2-4 hours

  • Depart from Tanzania or continue with further travel plans
